Esplanada Rotterdam
About This Spot
Esplanada Rotterdam sits quietly near the harbor of Palmeira, offering a genuine slice of local life that feels both unpretentious and welcoming. As you step inside, the space hums softly with the ebb and flow of visitors—fishermen starting their day, neighbors pausing for a midday meal, and curious travelers drawn in by the scent of the sea and grill. The pace is easy, a bit lively at lunchtime but never rushed, inviting you to settle in and soak up moments of calm community by the water.
The atmosphere is defined by its closeness to the harbor just beyond the windows, where boats rock gently and the daily catch soon finds its way from nets to plate. This connection to the sea is palpable here—not only in the genuine warmth of the service but in the fresh, simple meals that feel like a celebration of local flavors and maritime tradition. Plates come generously portioned, a sharing-worthy feast of grilled fish, lobster, and the occasional chicken dish, accompanied by humble sides like fries, rice, and fresh salad.
Dining here isn’t just about food; it’s a sensory thread linking conversation, the distant chatter of the harbor, and the tactile pleasure of fresh catch expertly prepared. It’s common to see a mix of locals and visitors side by side, drawn by the authenticity and value more than any polished tourism promise. The charm of the place is in its honest approach—nothing overly refined, no frills, just the simple pulse of this small fishing town’s flavors and stories, often punctuated by the occasional hum of flies that are simply part of this seaside rhythm.
After the meal, a stroll along the dock reveals the bustling life behind the scenes—the fish being cleaned and prepared nearby—making it easy to feel connected to where your meal began and reinforcing the grounded, real experience Esplanada Rotterdam offers. It’s a spot that doesn’t just feed the appetite, but also invites you to slow down, observe, and partake in the quieter joys of this corner of Cape Verde.

Fantastic fresh fish and octopus . Friendly service, it's located near the harbor. If you are visiting the Palmeira Bay and Harbor area, I can warmly recommend

We stopped here to have lunch when doing the island tour and it was really good. A small fisherman’s town and a restaurant near the water. The food was fresh, very tasty and very affordable. We had tuna steaks, grilled lobster and octopus and everything came with fries, rice and salad. The service was good, food came fast and you can also have some donuts with coconut or doce de leite.

Probably the best restaurant in Palmeira, the one you should go ! Great choice of food and huge portions (a tuna steak easily served 2 people ) ! It gets crowded at lunch time, noisy and there are a lot of flies around which is a bit uncomfortable but there is nothing you can do about it. Very reasonable prices ' ...had the best tuna of all !!!

Great find. Real. Mix of locals and lucky tourists. Helpful English speaking server. Lots of Fish to choose from+ chicken. Local filleted fish, veg and fries were perfect. My husband’s octopus was a little tough, but still OK. Very fair price. Don’t miss out!

Fantastic local restaurant. We feasted on grilled lobster, fish, prawns and chicken with lovely side dishes (rice, fries, vegetables) and were blown away by the quality and value for money. Such a nice meal after touring around the tourist spots on the island. 5+ stars. You can also walk around to the harbour after and see where they gut the same fish you eat at the restaurant, makes it feel truly sea to plate.

The best fish we had at Sal so far, it’s next to the harbor where fisherman’s has their boats. The restaurant is very local, simple but the food is so tasty, and so cheap.

Super seafood restaurant at very affordable prices. We tried goose barnacles as starter and two different types of grilled fish and everything was excellent.
